A Note from the Principal

Dear families,

It is that time of year when weather conditions may affect our school schedule.  Please remember to keep your phone numbers and emails updated in your EduConnect accounts so we have the correct contact information to notify you of any changes.

New Tax Benefit for Catholic School Parents-

As you may know, just before Christmas break Congress passed revisions to the federal tax code. These revisions will allow Catholic K-12 school parents to set up tax-deductible savings accounts to pay for their children’s school tuition. Money a parent deposits in one of these savings accounts is tax-deductible. For example, if a parent deposits $5,000 in an account, their taxable income is reduced by $5,000. Reducing taxable income reduces the parent’s tax liability. In the $5,000 example, a taxpayer could potentially pay $300 less in taxes, though other factors come into play in preparing one’s taxes.

Attached find a flier entitled “New Tax Benefit for Catholic School Parents”. It explains how parents can set up a tax-deductible Missouri 529 MOST account, thereby reducing the taxes they pay. Two links are provided in the flier so that families can determine what their tax benefit will be and then set up a 529 MOST account.

Please take time to read the attachments below and learn how to take advantage of this wonderful new benefit for our families!

Parish Nursery Sign Up

St. Gabriel’s Nursery: Winter Sign Up

We are scheduling volunteers for the parish nursery from January through March. The commitment is minimal and allows the parents of young children to peacefully attend 9am Sunday Mass. If you use the nursery we ask that you be available to work at least once every six weeks. Our goal is to have 2-3 student volunteers to assist 1-2 parent volunteers each week. Parent volunteers: If your spouse works with you please include both of your names. Student volunteers: Please feel free to forward this link to your friends in 6th, 7th, 8th or high school. We can always use more help. Please take a minute to select a date as soon as possible. And thank you for your support of this free service. It provides a great benefit to many of our parish families. Thanks again!

More families have been participating in the SCRIP program by purchasing through ShopwithSCRIP.com and the Back Pack order form that comes through school; very few families have been purchasing Scrip after school.  We have, therefore, decided to stop selling SCRIP after school in the meeting room.

SCRIP can still be purchased:

·         Tuesdays and Thursdays at the rectory 8:00 am-Noon

·         After the Masses on the weekend (Sat. 5:00 pm; Sun. 9:00 am and 11:00am

·         Through Back Pack order form Monday – Thursday

·         Online at ShopwithSCRIP.com

Thank you for purchasing SCRIP gift cards and supporting St. Gabriel the Archangel School.

If you have any questions or need help ordering SCRIP online at ShopWithScrip.com or in stock, please contact Margie Uxa at uxamr@swbell.net.

Counselor’s Corner

I will be putting a brief monthly note in the newsletter to keep parents informed of the activities that are going on with the counselor.

  • This month we will be focusing on goal setting in the classroom guidance lessons.
  • We will also be starting a peer leadership group for students in grades 6-8. If your student would like more information, please have them contact me to obtain an application. Applications are due Monday, January 15. Ms. Kilian will be the co-leader with me for this group.
  • We will be starting small groups including the lightbulb club and a girl’s empowerment group for 6th-grade girls.
  • We will be starting a lunch book club meeting. Keep your eyes open for more information.

As always, feel free to contact me at any time with any concerns or questions you may have. I appreciate all the support and encouragement I have received the first half of the year and have lots of exciting plans for the second half of the year!

Ms. Keim

Hoops and Jump for Heart time at St. Gabriel!

It is Hoops and Jump for Heart time at St. Gabriel!  Our school goal this year is to collect $20,000 for the American Heart Association!  Wow, that is a huge goal!  But remember, last year as a school we collected $19, 299!

Students can earn the Scare Squad this year.  They are monsters that remind students about healthy habits to use everyday, like getting 60 minutes of activity in a day and drinking less sugary beverages.  Other things students can earn besides those from the American Heart Association are

  • an out-of -uniform pass with a $5 or more donation,
  • be the PE teacher for the highest collector in each homeroom,
  • earn a Subway lunch for highest collector in each grade, and
  • $75 or more donation allows a student to “egg” a teacher at a school assembly.

Information was sent home before Christmas about the event, but here are some links to helpful videos to help you register online or use the Hoops/Jump app.
