A Note from the Principal
Here at school teachers are busy setting up their classrooms, our maintenance crew is making the building beautiful, our office staff is unpacking books and supplies, and all of us are so excited to begin another wonderful school year.
We have a few new staff members joining us this year that I would like to briefly introduce. All of our new staff members bring us an abundance of talent, energy, and enthusiasm. We are thrilled to have each of them join our team.
Nicolle McKinlay– Mrs. McKinlay will be teaching our computer and technology class. She is originally from Adelaide, Australia. Now she lives here in St. Louis with her husband and two young children.
Julie Garcia– Miss Garcia will be teaching 4th grade. She just moved here from Florida with her fiancé. She has taught in Catholic schools in Chicago and Florida.
Jessica Schellman- Mrs. Schellman will be teaching kindergarten this year. She lives in St. Louis with her husband and two daughters. She grew up right near us and went to St. Joan of Arc for grade school. It is great to have her teaching so close to where her education began.
Michelle Keim– Ms. Keim will be our full-time counselor this year. She lives with her daughter nearby in Waterloo, Illinois and has had a variety of roles in counseling.
Anne Pingel– Mrs. Pingel will be our new Technology Coordinator for the school and parish. She lives in Potosi with her family and has a long history in technology in educational settings.
Sally Iocca– Miss Iocca will be our part-time office assistant. Sally has a degree in psychology and music and loves singing. She will be with us each day from 7:45am-12:45 pm.
Elaine Lamar– Some of you may remember Mrs. Lamar who was one of our teacher’s aides two years ago. Mrs. Lamar will be returning as a teacher’s aide this year after beating breast cancer. We are thrilled to have her healthy and back with us. She and Mrs. Debbie Schommer will be our two aides this year.
Please be sure to welcome our new staff members when you meet them and welcome them to our community.
A few reminders of important dates and items over the next few weeks:
-The lunch volunteer schedule is now posted on our website. Please take a look and mark your calendars for your assigned days. Parent lunch volunteers hours are from 10:40 – 12:45 on Thursdays and from 11:00 – 12:45 on all other days of the week. Please sign in at the Office when you arrive. If you are unable to make your shift, please find a substitute for that day and notify Mrs. Italiano of the change. http://www.stgabschool.org/wp2_root/events/category/cafeteria-duty/
-EduConnect reopened with class lists yesterday. If your account is still closed, it may be due to an outstanding balance from last year. Please contact Joan Miller in the rectory at 353-6303 to clear up any outstanding balances.
-If you would like to volunteer in any school activities next year such as lunch duty, coaching a team, chaperoning a field trip, etc. and you have not taken Protecting God’s Children, we will have a training session at 66 pm on August 10th in the cafeteria. There are only 23 spots left as of this morning. Please click here to sign up for this session or find another session that works for you: http://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_list2.cfm?theOrgID=14498&theme=0
-If you have an incoming Kindergartener, 3rd grader, or 6th grader, your student will need to have a physical completed by the beginning of the school year. Please contact Mrs. Italiano at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.

As you probably know, there will be a total solar eclipse on August 21st. The last total solar eclipse to go across St. Louis was in 1442. The next total solar eclipse to take place in St. Louis will be in 2505, so this is a major event for our students to witness and learn about. We will have lessons about the solar eclipse leading up to the event and students will have a chance to view the partial and total eclipse that day.
Depending on what the viewing looks like that day, our viewing will take place on the school playground or at Francis Park. In order to take the students to Francis Park, we need you to complete a walking permission slip for each student. These will be available at our Open House on August 14th. If you are unable to attend Open House, we will send them home with the other beginning of the year paperwork on the first day of school. We have to have these returned by the morning of August 21st at the very latest for your child to be able to go to the park to view the Eclipse. If not, they will remain at school during the Eclipse.
We received a grant that provided us with enough glasses for every student and teacher. We also received extra pairs and next week we will send out information for some parent volunteers to help us chaperone students at the park that afternoon. Please pencil it in if you are interested in joining us and helping out. It is going to be an awesome experience!
